NORFOLK, Va (NNS) -- Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewmen
(SWCC) from Special Boat Team (SBT) 20, stationed at Naval
Amphibious Base Little Creek, Va., conducted a six-day class
on the operation and maintenance of the basic crew serve
weapons used aboard special operations craft beginning July
27.
>
> "This intention of this class is to make the operators
more effective at maintaining and repairing their weapons,"
said Dennis Doan, a Special Tactical Services senior
instructor. "The more familiar SWCCs are with how the guns
work, the faster they can fix a problem and get back in the
fight."
>
> The course focuses on the .50 caliber Browning machine
gun, the M240 machine gun and the MK19 40 millimeter grenade
launcher. There are two days of lecture and hands-on
instruction for each weapon. The first day consists of
general familiarization of the inner mechanics of the
weapon, with the second day consisting of advanced
maintenance, gauging and inspection. During this class the
students will completely break down the weapon and be
instructed on each part and its function. Then as they
reassemble the components, they will learn the cycle of
operation and what each step in the cycle involves.
>
> "The most important part this class is learning the cycle
of operations for each weapon," said Special Warfare Boat
Operator 2nd Class Joseph Berry, a student in the class.
"With a better understanding of the cycles, we will be able
to figure out when a problem occurs and how to fix it."
>
> SBT 20 conducts this class from three to four times a
year, depending on the need for personnel to be trained. The
class is usually made up of seven to eight SWCC from
different experience levels.
>
> Upon completion of this class the SWCC will have a better
understanding of how to maintain, and repair their weapons
to minimize down time, and make each boat more efficient in
the field.
>
> SWCCs are U.S. Special Operations Command maritime
mobility experts. They operate, deploy and maintain
state-of-the-art mobility systems, including the highly
capable and advanced Mark-V special operations craft, the
11-meter rigid-hull inflatable boat, and the SOC-R.
