Special Boat Team - 22,  Stennis, MS

Special Boat Team-22 was established Oct. 2002 as a result of NSW-21 force restructure changes. The Team is located at the John C. Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. SBT-22 is comprised of SOCR, CAC and PBL combatant craft and deploys its SBDs regularly to Central America and South America and the Middle East. Because SBT-22 is now the only NSW Riverine unit it can be deployed to any riverine environment in the world.

Special Boat Team 22 began its history as Coastal River Divison-22 in 1972 in New Orleans La. In 1979 it became Special Boat Unit - 22. The Team's long history in Riverine warfare is distinguished in Counter-Narcotic Operations in Central and South America. SBT-22 was a frontline unit in IRAQI FREEDOM 2003 and continues to serve as a frontline unit in the Global War on Terrorism.

(03-10-08) Vince Muscarello, CDR (Ret).  I was Engineer and Engineering Training Officer in SBR-2 at NAB Little Creek , and Naval Special Warfare Fleet Introduction Team OIC & Executive Office SBU-22 from 1992 – 1998 at New Orleans, LA.  I was also the Facilities Officer and negotiated the move to Stennis Space Center as well as, designed the current facilities layout.

I retired and am now an Educator.  I am an administrator with Corpus Christi ISD.  I have every year since I have been with the District coordinated Veteran’s Day events.  I remember taking our boats and equipment all over to display and promote Special Ops.  Sure would like to get a Boat Unit to come to Corpus.

Look forward to sharing memories.  I have some pictures of the Unit.  We took a Command picture in Jackson Square when Rich Loth was CO.  We use to do some runs through the French Quarters and down St. Charles Street for our 6+ mile runs.

During Hurricane Katrina 05 SBT-22 used their boats and crews to check homes and render assistance to stranded citizens.  SOCR (CCM) laydown supressive fire as they approach river bank.  SOCR (CCM) moves in fast for the extraction of SEALs  SOCR (CCM) extracts SEALs, the yellow smoke marking a position.  Expended 50 cal. brass and links, can't train for real without trigger pulling.

A SBT-22 (CCM) prepares for a helo lift by CH-47 helo. This method greatly extends the striking range of NSW forces. This tactic was developed in Vietnam by MST-2 using a LSSC craft. An Army Ch-47 lifts a SOCR. Note SWCC crewmen climbing up a ladder into helo.

HISTORY:   Special Boat Team TWENTY-TWO (SBT-22) is the direct descendent of Coastal River Division TWENTY-TWO, which was commissioned on December 16, 1972.  CRD-22 was located at Point Algiers, on the West Bank of the Mississippi River, and was situated across the river from New Orleans’ famed French Quarter.

In March 1979, the name was changed to Special Boat Unit TWENTY-TWO, as part of a community-wide realignment to reflect the community’s evolved mission within the Special Warfare community.  In 1998, the unit was moved to the John C. Stennis Space Center, about 45 miles north-east of New Orleans.   Read More Here
