Mobile Support Team Three

At various times during its history, BSU-1 deployed SEAL Support detachments with the designation "MST-3." The first MST-3 detachments went to Nha Be in 1967, after training and preparation as part of "Project Zulu" (Sources: Death in the Jungle, Dairy of a Navy SEAL by Gary Smith (SEAL MCPO (Ret.)) and Jim Gray GMCM (CC) Ret.). These first MST-3 detachments had one Mike boat, two LCPLs, two boston whalers and about 25 personnel. (Source: former EM3 Randy "Bear" Miller, MST-3).

It is possible that BSU-1's plan was to have a different numerical designation for each Mobile Support Team location, but the fact that many detachments moved locations during their deployment seems to have lead to the temporary dropping of the idea in favor of designating each detachment as part of MST-2. But MST-3 came back at least once more, for the first detachment sent to SEAFLOAT -- LT Bruce Robert's Det Echo in June of 1969 -- was designated MST-3. In any event, this site is dedicated to and seeks to document the men of MST-3 as well as those of MST-2. And you've gotta love their patch. (Patch courtesy of Randy "Bear" Miller)
